Career Spotlight: Hospitality IndustryBy Paul A. GreenbergEmployment Writer
Hospitality remains the major industry in New Orleans, even as the city is still recovering from the 2005 hurricanes. Having just come off of Sugar Bowl, Mardi Gras and the NBA All-Star weekend, it is clear that New Orleans still knows how to welcome visitors and create an unparalleled experience.
With that said, career possibilities are rich, in entities related to hospitality. From hotels, restaurants and inns, to tour companies, catering companies and destination venues (museums, tourist attractions, shopping districts, etc.) the variety of job possibilities in the hospitality industry seems almost never-ending.
Still, most jobs in the industry share several common elements. First, hospitality workers most often deal with tourists, so the variables constantly change. People who do this type of work must have strong interpersonal skills, and be able to readily communicate with people of different nationalities, varying ages, race and ethnic groups, and find a way to please them all. Depending on the type of job one does within the hospitality industry, the work can be rather high pressure and demanding.
